Why might an aluminium extrusion product off-grade?
A very usuful post from Linkedin.

Cheap aluminium is not always cheap
The real cost
Sometimes the real cost appears after installation.
Many times customers compare aluminium profiles only based on:
“$ per kg”
But aluminium extrusion quality is not decided only by weight and price.
Behind every good profile there is:
- Correct alloy chemistry
- Proper billet quality
- Controlled extrusion process
- Right heat treatment
- Required mechanical properties
Using recycled aluminium is not a problem.
Poor control of scrap is the problem.
Because uncontrolled material can create:
- Chemical variation
- Lower mechanical performance
- Poor bending behaviour
- Surface defects after finishing
- Inconsistent quality
A profile may look the same from outside.
Testing
But the difference appears during:
Spectrometer testing
Checks whether alloy chemistry matches the requirement.
Bending performance
Good material bends properly.
Poor quality material may crack because of impurities, incorrect alloy or processing issues.
Anodising results
Material quality can affect final appearance.
Problems like:
- Colour variation
- Streak formation
- Dark patches
can appear after finishing.
Mechanical testing
Strength and elongation reveal the actual performance.
The observation
The cheapest profile is not always the lowest cost solution.
The right profile is the one that satisfies the application requirement.
For decorative use, structural use, windows, doors, industrial applications —
Choose material based on performance.
Not only price.
Because aluminium quality is not just what you see.
It is what you verify.
