Metallurgical characteristics

  • The main alloying elements are magnesium, silicon and manganese in the form of additives
  • The strengthening component is the intermetallic compound Mg2Si.
  • At the nominal amount of chemical composition Mg compound2Si after artificial aging can reach about 1,4 % with excess silicon content 0,5 % [1]
  • Manganese compounds inhibite recrystallization and, thereby, they allow to control the morphology and grain size during heat treatments.
  • Typical tempers are T6 and T4.

  • It has the highest strength among the alloys of the 6xxx series. It is believed structural alloys.
  • In sheet form used for machining
  • A relatively new alloy. Most often used in Europe, than in North America. Due to the higher strength of an alloy is often used instead of 6061.
  • Additives large amount of manganese provide control of grain structure, what, in turn, It allows to achieve higher strength.
  • Difficult to manufacture thin walled extrusions complex.
