The alloy designations
- EN 573-3: EN AW-6082 и EN AW-Al Si1MgMn
- Teal Sheets (Aluminum Association): 6082
- Unified Numbering System (UNS): A96082
- ISO 209:2007: 6082
- DIN 1725-1 (canceled): AlMgS1 and 3.2315
Metallurgical characteristics
- An alloy of 6xxx series
- Deformable: by pressing and rolling methods
- Heat hardenable
- The main alloying elements are magnesium, silicon and manganese in the form of additives
- The strengthening component is the intermetallic compound Mg2Si.
- At the nominal amount of chemical composition Mg compound2Si after artificial aging can reach about 1,4 % with excess silicon content 0,5 % [1]
- Manganese compounds inhibite recrystallization and, thereby, they allow to control the morphology and grain size during heat treatments.
- Typical tempers are T6 and T4.
- Condition T6: quenching with water after heating for quenching at 540 ºC and artificial aging at 175 ° C within 8 hours [1]
- T4 state: natural aging at 20 ° C for at least 8 days after heating for hardening as for condition T6 [1]
- It has no analogues in the GOST 4784-97
- The place of alloy 6082 among other 6xxx series alloys are shown . in the figure below
Important properties
- Medium strength aluminum alloy
- High corrosion resistance
- It has the highest strength among the alloys of the 6xxx series. It is believed structural alloys.
- In sheet form used for machining
- A relatively new alloy. Most often used in Europe, than in North America. Due to the higher strength of an alloy is often used instead of 6061.
- Additives large amount of manganese provide control of grain structure, what, in turn, It allows to achieve higher strength.
- Difficult to manufacture thin walled extrusions complex.
- The surface quality of extruded products below, than for other 6xxx series alloys
- In states T6 and T651, it is well machined by cutting with the formation of long dense chips [2]
Typical applications
- In passenger cars: side frame elements, door frames, body shell elements [1]
- Highly loaded parts and components
- bridges
- cranes
- transportation
- Beams and trusses
- Ore Buckets [2]
- Beer barrels [2]
- Milk cans [2]
